Journal ObviousGuy's Journal: Banned@home 3

Well, it looks like someone got a hold of my IP address and spammed 1.3k comments onto Slashdot. Or rather, that's what RobO@slashdot.org informed me when I inquired as to why I was receiving the pink screen of death.

Here's the situation, someone spammed /. with 1300 comments from my IP yesterday. I have a DSL line, so my IP doesn't change all that often, implicating me as the prime culprit. However, my laptop (Win2k) was in Standby mode all day while these comments were getting posted (I was at work).

Now, is it possible that my laptop was spamming without my knowledge? Can it even do that while in Standby mode?

I've looked for trojans on the system, but can't find anything out of the ordinary running or any weird services started.

Anyone have any ideas?

[Update for egg troll]

I asked RobO to give me an example and am waiting for it to arrive. I'm banned from posting at work (this was likely my own fault, though), so I can't reply directly to your message.

Has anyone picked up 1,300 crapfloods on their radars?

[Final update to this saga]

Well, it seems that I was mistaken by RobO's use of the term "comment request". It means "page views" rather than actual comments posted. So I have to fess up, those page views were my own.

It seems I got a little overzealous the other day in this thread.

So the lesson to be learned in all of this is not to post often and not to check for responses often either.

Thanks to Rob Oostendorp for unbanning me. Thank you all and God bless.
