Comment Perspective (Score 1) 275

From the Copernicus site: https://climate.copernicus.eu/...

This October was 0.01 Celsius warmer than October 2015 which is now the second warmest October

This means we warmed at a rate of 0.0025 C per year since 2015.

Based on this rate in 100 years time we will have warmed a further 0.25 C, tell me why I should be concerned by this news....

Comment Science is Settled (Score 3, Insightful) 319

Yesterday Antarctica was contributing 0.27mm p/y to sea level rise
Today Antarctica is removing 0.23mm p/y to sea level rise
A 0.5mm p/y change in a day.
We are told sea level is rising 2.6 to 2.9mm p/y so that 0.5mm p/y change is 16 - 20% of the total figure, that is a massive discrepancy.

Keep being told that the science is settled, this hardly looks like settled science to me.

But queue the alarmists, I am sure they will explain this is 'worse news than eva' and matches what they predicted.

Or wait a year or two and NASA will adjust the data based on models 'cause the real data doesn't match the models, and everyone knows models trump real data in climate science.

Comment Drag the call out (Score 1) 212

I like these calls. If it comes in an evening and I have nothing to do I try and drag them out for as long as possible. The enjoyment hearing the reaction of the person at the other end when you finally tell them you work in IT, know it is a scam and that you were dragging the call out so that they had less time to call other people is priceless. Think the longest was a bit over an hour before I got bored with it.

Multimodal, Multitouch Gaming Gaining Traction 94

andylim writes "Several universities and commercial entities are developing multimodal, multitouch games, such as a card game using iPhones for individual hands and an iPad for public information, and an iPad Scrabble game that lets you use your iPhone to see your letter tiles. Of course, it's an extremely expensive setup right now, but over time it will become cheaper. It's also pretty cool, so why wouldn't you want to play board/card/strategy games like this?"

Uproar Over Netflix's New Instant Viewer 575

almechist writes "Many Netflix customers are up in arms over the new instant-watch player powered by Microsoft's Silverlight. The official Netflix blog is full of complaints from users who decry not only the new player's quality but also the way it's being distributed, with many claiming they were deceived into downloading it. Once you opt for the new player, the old Windows Media based player won't function, not on any computer associated with the account. The new player is supposedly still beta, but NF members are strongly encouraged (some say tricked) by NF into the so-called 'upgrade,' which is permanent — there is no way to opt out. The marked decrease in video quality seen by those who have switched is perhaps not surprising, since the old player could utilize bit streams up to twice as fast as the new one, but this information is nowhere given out by NF. So far NF has been answering all complaints with variations on 'tough luck pal, you're stuck with it,' but many customers are so disgusted they're ready to cancel their NF membership. This could be a public relations disaster in the making for Netflix."

Sony To Unveil New Fuel-Cell Prototype 116

Nakeot writes "On Friday, Sony plans to unveil their newest portable fuel-cell technology, aimed at a variety of mobile applications. From the article: "The system contains both a methanol fuel cell and a Li-on battery" and can "intelligently switch between power from the battery, fuel, or even both under high-draw circumstances." Sony intends to show off two models claimed to power your cell for a week or a month, respectively, as well as the latest developments with their sugar-batteries that can now run purely off your favorite cola beverage. This model builds on Sony's 2008 model, their first commercially-demonstratable prototype, and could make waves with Sony's OLED devices, but will Sony be able to avoid another battery recall?"
