Truck-Mounted Laser Guns 370

bl8n8r writes "Boeing has announced a contract with the US Army to develop laser cannons that are to be mounted atop 20-ton trucks for the purpose of shooting down incoming artillery, rockets, mortars, or bombs. The High Energy Laser Technology Demonstrator project actually shoots stuff instead of just painting a mark on a target for other armament to hit."

Comment Vector Processing? (Score 1) 161

"the machine may be ineligible because of its specialized hardware"
What specialized hardware? I would really like to read a more technical article about this machine. I would guess that the Japanese focused on vector processing like they did in the design of the Earth-Simulator.

The best supporting evidence I have for this conclusion is the comparison of Japan's last two supercomputers:
Sun Fire X64 Cluster
Earth-Simulator

Sun Fire has 10,368 processors with a Rmax(GFlops) of 38,180.
Earth-Simulator has 5,120 processors with a Rmax(GFlops) of 35,860.
That's 49% less processors with 94% the processor power*.

Journal Journal: Books To Read

Just finished From a Buick 8 by Stephen King a few days ago and at the end of the book King recommended reading K.C. Constantine's books. So, this journal entry to remind me that books by K.C. Constantine might be something to look into if I ever finish reading the many books I already own.
