Comment Formalized side gigs = Wage slavery (Score 2) 169

Uber may be a good option if you need some extra cash. It would be a really shitty career. Forcing people to do shit work 40 hours/ week for companies like Uber by forcing the companies to offer the trappings of a full time job is not my idea of a progressive society. The fact that you can work when and if you choose to should automatically disqualify gig work companies from having to offer benefits. If we are really concerned about everyone having healthcare, maybe we could act like a grown up country and just provide to everyone rather than forcing everyone into wage slavery.

The only reason IRS scams are a thing at all is that the whole tax return system/process is such a mess in the first place. If the IRS just sent you a bill, (with people who needed to, filing a simple amendment for non-standard deductions), it would eliminate most of the ambiguity around what people owe, and many people would simply be paying what the IRS says they owe. Once you eliminate having taxpayers calculate everything themselves, you eliminate the majority of people's own uncertainty about whether they are paying the right amount, and pretty much close the door to all the scams. Besides, the biggest fraud is the average taxpayer paying nearly $60 annually for software that can be recreated in a simple spreadsheet.
