Maybe it was a bit premature, maybe ..

At least for me, 1.0 means that the core components like gnome-libs have reached their
prime time. They have a stable and clean API
that won't change very much in near future.

This is an important issue for application programmers, 1.0 signals them that they can
write applications that use that API without
worrying that their Apps may get broken due to
API changes, ...

Another issue is that people will prefer writing
documentation about code that does not change
every few weeks.

Releasing Gnome as 1.0 means that people can actually start using it and develop any cool
applications they like with it.

Of cause it has bugs - every new software product has them, but you can start writing any cool
applications you want right now ...

So since it's already late at night, I'd say
