In my teens I would read anything I could get my hands on. Then in my late teens, after realizing that I wasn’t really feeling satisfied after reading a book, I began to go back and re-read fiction books that seemed to have a certain attraction for me. So for example I would re-read all the Sherlock Holmes stories, and Catch-22, once a year. Then I became obsessed with Carlos Castaneda, reading each book in the series many times. Similar to how, in the past, people would memorize poems to realize the deeper meaning. Now I’m an old man. I believe that approach to reading promotes the development of critical thinking and analysis.
