Comment Nuclear Closed Loop (Score 2) 189

What about using nuclear (reduced life cycle greenhouse gasses, yes, we need diesel to mine uranium/thorium) with a closed loop system through the heat exchangers? The problem is plants that tap well, river or ocean water, and run it through evaporative cooling towers. This problem is created by the economic advantage granted to building gignormous plants that can't dispose of heat easily to their cool heatsink (thermodynamics baby) in order to do work. Now about a small nuke plant like the naval reactors that doesn't generate the enormous amounts of waste heat?

What Do You Call People Who "Do HTML"? 586

gilgongo writes "It's more than 10 years since people started making a living writing web page markup, yet the job title (and role) has yet to settle down. Not only that, but there are different types of people who write markup: those that approach the craft as essentially an integration task, and those that see it as part of UI design overall. The situation is further complicated by the existence of other roles in the workplace such as graphic designer and information architect. This is making recruitment for this role a real headache. So, how do you describe people who 'do HTML' (and CSS and maybe a bit of JavaScript and graphics manipulation)? Some job titles I've seen include: Design Technologist, Web Developer, Front-end Developer, HTML/CSS Developer, Client-side Developer and UI Engineer. Do you have any favourite job titles for this role?"

Submission + - New City Provided Wi-Fi Banned Due to Crazies (pressdemocrat.com) 1

exphose writes: "A small town in Northern California, Sebastopol (map), had made an agreement with Sonic.net to provide downtown wireless access via wi-fi for free to everyone. However, not everyone in this admittedly hippie friendly town was pleased. Why would anyone be against free downtown wifi access? Well apparently according to Sebastopol Mayor Craig Litwin, citizens had voiced concerns that "create enough suspicion that there may be a health hazard." and so they canceled their contract with Sonic.net. I found some more details at the here blog of Sonic.net's CEO for some more detail. What does Slashdot think of these petitioners and the claims of Wi-Fi health risks. Are there actually any studies anywhere that corroborate the risks or is it just a bunch of tin foil hat madness? How upset would you be if your city stopped it's rollout of free Wi-Fi or similar services due to such concerns?"
