Comment The UK Gov will just mandate a backdoor on phones (Score 1) 46

To get around secure communications the UK Government can simply mandate that all phones they want to monitor are pushed a backdoor that allows 'lawful access' to data before it is encrypted and after replies are decrypted. This is of course a very stupid thing to do that will cause massive security problems but it is likely to happen. The legislation is already in place in the UK, and possibly in other countries too.

Comment Green hydrogen is not viable for energy storage (Score 2) 34

Green hydrogen is typically produced through electrolysis which is very energy inefficient, and once produced hydrogen is difficult to store. The very small size of the hydrogen molecule means that leaks are very likely, and the pressures and low temperatures required to store hydrogen in liquid form add to the costs. Converting hydrogen to Methane (CH3) or Methanol (CH3OH) introduce a troubling carbon (C) atom which needs carbon capture (CCS) when they are used which again increases costs. Converting to ammonia (NH3) is better but process again is energy inefficient, and there is the potential for NOx gasses when used.

Forget the green hydrogen and just install grid scale batteries, they are proven technology, they are cheap and getting cheaper by the day. Batteries are already very efficient for storing and retrieving energy, and electricity cables are a proven and effective way to transport electricity.
The fossil fuel lobby love hydrogen because the cheapest way to produce it is from fossil fuels such as LNG which is around 90% methane, but there is the problem of CO2 emissions and the expense of carbon capture which is also not viable.

So lets just stick with electricity cables and battery storage

Comment 99.9% of all viruses in wild - Microsoft only (Score 3, Interesting) 679

More than 99.9% of all viruses in the wild will only work with Microsoft software.

Sobig, Mimail, Sircam, Lovebug, Nimda, Code Red the list goes on.

Microsoft will say that this is because most computers on the Internet run Windows, but a look at netcraft.com shows that more than 2 thirds of web servers run Apache, and only about 20% run IIS.

Windows has more than 90% of desktops, but not more than 99.9%. I run Linux on my desktop, and don't even bother to run the Sophos antivirus client I have a license for, no point, no one could infect my desktop with any of the 80,000+ viruses sophos detects.

If Microsoft are going to try this one then they will have to tell lies and pay for carefully run studies.

I bet they will not compare Windows and Linux viruses!!
