If it works for you great but for me I want most of the items i use to be on the one stable section, not having to change every time and having to remember all five(?) ribbons. Seems a lot more clicks and mouse movement to me and so I think it's terrible UI design. I've heard it was only developed so that Microsoft had unique patent-able interface so that Libreoffice etc would seem alien to most people. They could have had both interfaces and let people select what they find effective...

The UK has higher rape and drug use than the USA. And though i wasn't able to quickly find a reference but I believe the UK has much more knife related crimes. I would suggest most western countries have problems that need working on, it's just most don't have a fixation on guns like the USA

Ontario School Bans Wi-Fi 287

St. Vincent Euphrasia elementary school in Meaford, Ont. is the latest Canadian school to decide to save its students from the harmful effects of Wi-Fi by banning it. Schools from universities on down have a history of banning Wi-Fi in Ontario. As usual, health officials and know-it-all scientists have called the move ridiculous. Health Canada has released a statement saying, "Wi-Fi is the second most prevalent form of wireless technology next to cell phones. It is widely used across Canada in schools, offices, coffee shops, personal dwellings, as well as countless other locations. Health Canada continues to reassure Canadians that the radiofrequency energy emitted from Wi-Fi equipment is extremely low and is not associated with any health problems."

i totally agree with your point about cars. in 50 years time we'll look back with amazement at how decadent we were now. 1.5t of metal to move often one person, 75kg. If you live in a city you can get away with a top speed of 60kph.

Whatever fuel source cars will use in the future they will be substantially more efficient than todays.

Scientists Discover Booze That Won't Give You a Hangover 334

Kwang-il Kwon and Hye Gwang Jeong of Chungnam National University have discovered that drinking alcohol with oxygen bubbles added leads to fewer hangovers and a shorter sobering up time. People drinking the bubbly booze sobered up 20-30 minutes faster and had less severe and fewer hangovers than people who drank the non-fizzy stuff. Kwon said: "The oxygen-enriched alcohol beverage reduces plasma alcohol concentrations faster than a normal dissolved-oxygen alcohol beverage does. This could provide both clinical and real-life significance. The oxygen-enriched alcohol beverage would allow individuals to become sober faster, and reduce the side effects of acetaldehyde without a significant difference in alcohol's effects. Furthermore, the reduced time to a lower BAC may reduce alcohol-related accidents."

Passage of Time Solves PS3 Glitch 147

An anonymous reader writes "A quick update on the widespread PlayStation 3 glitch we discussed recently: as of last night (Monday, March 1st) the problem has resolved itself. I powered up my PS3 to find the clock was set to April 29th, 2020, but once I went into the system menu and set the date and time via the internet I got an accurate date. That seems to be the test of whether your PS3 is 'fixed' or not; Sony says you should be all set."
