Comment No Pain, No Reason To Comply (Score 1) 290

Lots of discussion on here about improved laws, and improved enforcement. Both reasonable, but I think this is a really long path to actually fixing this. Especially since multiple countries cars all drive on the same roads.

Is there any reason a better feedback loop wouldn't work? Maybe something like all cars should be mandated to put high quality reflectors on the top of their rear windows. This would mean any lights that are aimed too high would reflect right back at the driver of said car. Any concern about safety here would seem to be that Car A with crappy lights affects their own safety, today we are in a world of Car A with crappy lights improves their own safety and hurts everyone else's, the current world creates incentives to hurt everyone else.

I realize this doesn't specifically affect the head on scenario, but it would generally help people be more aware of their own lights.

Most of the issues I see on the road are not aftermarket lights. They are 1. Jeeps. 2 Trucks. 3. SUVs.

I liked the last paragraph of the article "It is thought that several beaver families joined forces to create the massive dam, containing thousands of trees, and took many months to complete it."

Compare that to the article from the CBC "Biologists estimate the dam would have taken at least 20 years to build. It is visible in NASA satellite imagery from 1990."

What if I write a book, and then 5-10 years later I regret what I wrote, and don't want it published anymore. I think that the author of the book should be able to control what is done with their works at least while they are alive. Think of a musician who writes and records an absolutely horrible song, and as a result decides never to sell it, you think someone who gets a hold of a copy of this song should now be able to distribute it, just because the artist doesn't like it? Just so they can laugh at this artist?

I am not sure that I understand what you mean by wanting copyright to be an "opt-in system". I like the fact that I know that whatever I put to paper is automatically copyrighted. This means that by default my random spewings in a private journal (for example) are protected by copyright and no-one can republish them if they happen to get a hold of them by chance. This is also the case for an online web site that I create as well or some piece of code that I write. Do you really think everyone should have to constantly opt-in for copyrights to everything they ever put to paper?
