Comment I believe gog is actively harming game preservatio (Score 0) 42

"DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play." This label is on every game they sell. But it's a lie on many games. How many titles are deliberately compromised I am not certain, but many are. There used to be a way to tell if they were lying about not needing activation by their additional warning that the game requires agreement to the EULA. Games with that warning in fact need internet access to activate. However, I have found that not only is activation required on some titles, but a full-time internet connection is required so they can watch you play "your" game.

Comment Maybe clean up Craigslist, first (Score 2) 16

When I think of Craig, I think of Craigslist. And when I think of Craigslist, I think of scams. I see obvious scams. I see people begging scammers not to bother them while they try to sell their legit items, because if you've ever tried to sell something of any value on Craigslist, you've likely been contacted by a scammer.

I see people giving away and selling pets in every category. I see dating ads in every category. It is not uncommon to see someone selling drugs in any category. Whether or not you agree or disagree about people's ability to make these kinds of ads is not the point, the point is they're a mess and contribute to craigslist's decline.

If you've tried to look for something to buy, you've likely been annoyed by loads of dealer ads that are mis-categorized as ads by individuals. This is because to post as a dealer, I believe you need to pay. If Craig can not even pretend to enforce this one thing, it cements them into the trash tier, because of the sheer quantity of these types of ads. I shouldn't need to point out that by letting this go as long as they have, it severely dis-incentivizes dealers who were willing to pay.

I want a viable alternative to facebook and ebay, and right now craigslist isn't it. So, maybe get your namesake secure, the thing that made you famous. Then, maybe people would consider taking your cyber security advice seriously. Don't just throw money at something you say you care about, lead by example.

What's the point of having extremely large files already present? I didn't mention telemetry in my last post. I mentioned it once. I'm talking about games that GOG sells on pages that say "no activation - drm free" which in fact require activation or perpetual server permission.

You absolutely can copy and store steamguard titles. Running them, that's where you need permission from steam. The ethical problem with GOG is they're selling some single player games which, even after you've acquired all the necessary windows components(which from a game preservation standpoint you shouldn't need), it's still going to need to ask permission from wherever the fark ever, either that first launch, or perpetually as you play.

Comment Maybe fix what you already have? (Score 2) 36

After a recent purchase, it would appear to me that they've already shifted their focus away from DRM-free. After going through the (significant)effort to download a purchase and finding out it will crash immediately without internet, I read the reviews which revealed I am not alone. Not only does the title not start if offline, the title is continually uploading "telemetry" as you play and the game will stop working if your connection drops. Now, on another title, I've found that they've dramatically changed the game's directory structure. It does work, and well, without internet and all of that. But because of their GOG-ification environment, they've eliminated the possibility of mods or even minor tweaks to .ini files, which means I can't play the game the way I remember playing it when it was current. The steam version supposedly doesn't have these issues, so I don't understand why the GOG release does. A third title needed a .net framework download. I feel like for true preservation, you need to eliminate that kind of requirement. I've come to the conclusion that despite my hatred for consoles, the older ones might be the last best hope for preserving the games I remember.
