Comment Contracting Assignments (Score 1) 142
My experience seems to differ from many of the posters here. Since my last permanent job in '95, I've basically worked as a 'permatemp' for three companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. All of them I found through dice.com. The assignments haven't been that hard to get, but as my rate increases, I am finding it harder to get people interested in me without having improved my skills.
As far as telecommuting is concerned, if the job could be done completely by telecommuting, companies would find offshore resources that would charge pennies to the dollars you'd probably like to see. (Have you looked at eLance.com? There are Indian and Russian programmers there who will do projects for hundreds of dollars, where a US-based programmer would have to charge thousands to stay alive.)
My client (employers) have allowed me to telecommute as a perk only after I've demonstrated my effectiveness and value to them.
