Exchange Comes To Linux As OpenChange 249

joesmart writes to tell us that new work on OpenChange and KDE seeks to bridge the gap between groupware compatibility and open source. KDE developer Brad Hards spoke at the Linux.conf.au conference and said the goal of OpenChange is to implement the Microsoft Exchange protocols as they are used by Outlook. "OpenChange has client and server-side libraries for Exchange integration and relies heavily on code developed for Samba 4. It is open source software licensed under the GPL version 3. Hards said more work is being done on the client side and 'we have code for the server,' but estimates another 12 months of development is required to produce an OpenChange server ready for production."

Steve Jobs Takes Leave of Absence From Apple 429

An anonymous reader writes with this excerpt from Network World: "A number of sites are reporting that Apple's CEO Steve Jobs is taking a leave of absence till June at least. Speculation over Jobs' possibly failing health has run rampant in the past few weeks. Prior to the recent MacWorld show, Jobs said he had a hormone deficiency that had caused him to dramatically lose weight. In a memo today Jobs told workers his health issues are more complex than he thought." Reader Bastian227 adds a link to this letter from Steve Jobs on Apple's website, which also says that Tim Cook will be responsible for daily operations, though Jobs will remain involved with major strategic decisions.

XKCD Invited To New Yorker "Cartoon-Off" 231

UnknowingFool writes "Farley Katz, who draws for New Yorker magazine, ran into xkcd.com's Randall Munroe in a grocery store. He challenged Munroe to a cartoon-off — each cartoonist to produce drawings about the Internet as envisioned by the elderly, String Theory, 1999, and one's favorite animal eating one's favorite food. In the ensuing short interview, Munroe describes XKCD as 'a webcomic about stick figures who do math, play with staple guns, mess around on the Internet, and have lots of sex. It's about three-fourths autobiographical.'"

RIAA Wants Its $222,000 Verdict Back 203

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes "The RIAA, unhappy with the Court's decision setting aside its $222,000 jury verdict over $23.76 worth of song files, and throwing out the legal theory on which it was based, has made a motion for permission to file an appeal from the Judge's order, in Capitol v. Thomas. Normally, only final judgments are appealable, and appeals are not permissible in federal court from 'interlocutory' orders of that nature."

After reading several things which Jack Thompson wrote, it seems that he lacks a coherent argument, and resorts to ass kissing and name calling more than half of the time.

In the scanned letter, he refers to Penny Arcade as "an extortion ring," a "bunch of computer geeks," and repeatedly spews "facts" about the gaming industry which have yet to be proven. To my limited knowledge, Rockstar Games has not publically admitted that GTA:Vice City is some sort of combat simulator which prepares youth to overthrow authority. Hell, the game has very little bearing on reality from what I have seen.

Lets face it, this letter was designed to have maximum effectiveness with the police, not a third party. He doesn't seem to be bothered by this alleged harrassment, instead, his letter seems to be a vengeful attack on Penny Arcade.

This guy needs to do some research and forget about whatever it is that motivates his attack on "violence." Whether he is after money, political power, or a place in history is not certain, but there is clearly an ulterior motive to his attack on the gaming industry.
