I think the big thing is not many big-blockbuster franchise releases happened yet this year 2004. Most of them struck in Q3 2003 or are coming in what looks to be Q4 2004.
The Sims 2 was due for Feb 2004, but EA decided to let the game go to Sept for it to be polished. Doom 3 countlessly been pushed back MANY times. HL2 got pushed back to Sept. 2004. Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines isn't due 'til around November 2004, if I recall.
Personally, this year has been quite dead for PC gaming. Far Cry was probably the big blockbuster game this year, so far. Can't forget UT2004, either, of course. What was the big RPG this year so far for PC released this year? Beyond Divinity?!?!?
I think what also caused the sale decrease in 2004 was the whole serge of games released by Christmas 2003 -- and there were some that probably could've waited to be put out in 2004, but were put out just to make that X-Mas Date for sales. I'm thinking Halo and Deus Ex:IW here, as some of them that could've probably waited.
The serge seemed endless in Q4 2003, with loads of goodies -- which I ain't caught up on yet (probably b/c some I can't run, either)! Here's some -- Broken Sword 3: Sleeping Dragon, BG&E, PoP:SOT, SH3, Myst: Uru, Gothic 2, SW:KOTOR, and the list just goes on and on. With just a cast like that, it's not easy to keep up!
But to me, I think this Summer-Winter 2004 looks to be nasty cast of games coming up. Most of them, I mentioned in my 2nd paragraph: D3, HL2, Sims 2 and Vampire Bloodlines. I believe STALKER's 2004, also. I think we're going to see a booming Q4 2004, to say the VERY least, that will be a similar assault of games we had last year Q4 2003.
