Some people do look at lines and lines of code looking for potential errors, even for free. Furthermore, with free software, you can pay people to audit the code, so pretending that people only get paid with proprietary software is nonsense. In addition, we already know how malicious and exploit-ridden proprietary software usually is, so apparently paying code monkeys to write software isn't going to produce even mediocre code.
