Because in Costa Rica there is a government owned monopoly on electric distribution, and the public owned company refused to buy power from private generators for ideological reasons, even if it was cheaper and cleaner from them than their own generation.
They cannot deliver the power to anybody outside their facilities, so they were forced to shut down.

Installing local cryto farms inside their facilities allows them to reopen and hire back their employees, there are many cases like this one, others are trying to work generating green hydrogen, but the market is not as big and the equipment is not as cheap as the crypto mining, so there's that.

No, they can't.

Costa Rica has a government owned monopoly on electric distribution. The public owned company that can distribute refused to buy from private generators because of ideological reasons and they were forced to shutdown because their electricity could not be delivered to anybody.

Installing local crypto farms next to the generating facility allows them to regain operation and hire back their employees... there are many cases like this, some are trying to do better things like green hydrogen generation and packing, but the market and technology for that is not as cheap as the crypto thingy.

Comment They both are, almost always, done wrong (Score 1) 104

Most sites and apps do their light and dark modes wrong, that's why they are both hard to read, and only one harder than the other.

The most common mistake is to aim for maximum contrast, and that derives into having full light and full darkness (or almost full, like the rgb(54,54,54) slashdot contrast vs a white background. These extremes are what they hurt they eyes and makes us tired. If we had better care we would choose off-white backgrounds like most paper books, and some gray that has just enough contrast, but not extreme to that background... this would make a great light mode, and for a dark mode a dark blueish background like #1a2b3c makes a perfect background and can be contrasted to a off white text like #fef8ec.

But if we keep getting full whites against full blacks and full blacks against full whites, both modes will be though on the eyes.

Comment Why Sugar you said? (Score 3, Interesting) 441

Why is the US using sugar instead of a bigger product for Costa Rica, like coffee or bananas?

I'll tell you why, there's a controlling elite in Costa Rica that has managed the country for a few years already, and the head of this elite is the current President and his brother, Oscar and Rodrigo Arias, which in turn own the biggest sugar cane fields in the country. So the attack is directly to their pockets and so they move all their influence to enforce the IP law, that includes stupid rules as that every restaurant or public place will have to pay royalty to the RIAA equivalent in our country if they play the radio to keep their customers entertained!

The worst case is that the oposition in our country is not well organized nor has the intellectual strength to fight this kind of laws, plus the elite has majority in congress, so the IP laws have some resistance, but they have not been approved because congress is to darn slow to do anything, so we'll get them eventually.
