Breaking the Squid Barrier 126

An anonymous reader writes "Dr. Steve O'Shea of Auckland, New Zealand is attempting to break the record for keeping deep sea squid alive in captivity, with the goal of being able to raise a giant squid one day. Right now, he's raising the broad squid, sepioteuthis australis, from egg masses found in seaweed. This is a lot harder than it sounds, because the squid he's studying grow rapidly and eat only live prey, making it hard for them to keep the squid from becoming prey themselves. If his research works out, you might one day be able to visit an aquarium and see giant squid."

We recently tried to migrate from a Windows 2008/Exchange 2007 server to a OSX Snow Leopard Server box... what a nightmare!

Setting up all the mail accounts was strange, because you set up a primary email account username (let's say the username is bob for the email address bob@robert.com). Then you can add aliases for that account, like robert and rob. The weirdness comes into play when sometimes while adding aliases, for no reason, an alias name will take over as the primary account name (the primary account name will change from bob to robert). The only way to fix this is to REMOVE THE ACCOUNT, or to keep adding random aliases and removing them in hopes that the real account name will flop back to primary. This is all a known issue on Apple's support site.

The easiest part was moving mail (we just set up connections to the old exchange server and the new mac mail server, and dragged over the folders from one to the other, worked like a charm.)

Calendar export import was iffy, but eventually worked.

Contacts? Terrible. We copied our contacts over from Exchange to Mac Server. The Mac Server contacts format is CardDAV, a new standard for storing contact information. This would be OK if all of our iPhones support CardDAV (they don't!).

With Exchange, our iPhones synchronized flawlessly using Push for email/contacts/calendar events. Since iPhone doesn't support CardDAV, the only solution to get your contacts onto the iPhone is to set up Mac address book on a desktop machine to connect to the Mac Server. Then, YOU HAVE TO COPY ALL OF YOUR CONTACTS TO YOUR LOCAL MACHINE. Now you have two copies of all your contacts, one on the server, one locally. You can then tether your iPhone and sync the contacts with iTunes (iTunes won't sych contacts on the server, which is why you have to make a local copy of all the contacts). Any time you have a new contact on the server you will need to put it on your local machine as well.

So if that wasn't bad enough, here's the next fun thing: OS X SNOW LEOPARD SERVER DOES NOT SUPPORT PUSH EMAIL TO IPHONES (despite their site saying it does!). This was a big WTF moment for us, considering these are both Apple products.

Finally, we had a ton of problems with sending Calendar invitations -- these would (seemingly randomly) attach themselves to the wrong Calendars. Sometimes the event would attach to a local calendar, others to the calendar on the server. The only solution we found to this was to DELETE local calendars. /sigh

Eventually we just sent the server back, Apple was kind enough to issue a full refund without a restocking fee. We moved everything back to Exchange. :(

No l33tness test here! I was just stating what settings I was on in case someone else was interested to try 3D gaming in a virtual environment. I don't have a linux box at my disposal currently, but I might switch one of my home machines if this can be done with something other than parallels! What VM software do you use?

OLPC's "Give 1 Get 1" Comes To Europe 134

Christoph Derndorfer writes "Last year OLPC's XO-laptop was among the hottest Christmas gadgets thanks to the organization's G1G1 program, where you could donate $399 to give one XO-laptop to a child in the developing world and receive one yourself in return. However in 2007 the program was only available for US and Canadian citizens. This year's program, which takes off November 17, is also available to citizens in the EU member states, Switzerland, Russia, and Turkey. This is certainly awesome news for all the OLPC / Linux / gadget enthusiasts here in Europe! P.S. Before anyone asks, these XOs will come equipped with the child-friendly Sugar platform, which is based on Fedora 9, and not Windows XP."

EU Will Not Divulge Microsoft Contracts 219

Elektroschock writes "Marco Cappato, a Liberal member of the European Parliament, wanted to inspect the EU's contracts with Microsoft. His request was denied. '...the [divulging] of [this] information could jeopardize the protection of commercial interest of Microsoft.' Apparently the European Council sees no clear public interest in the release of such contractual material, and so 'the Secretariat general concludes that the protection of Microsoft's commercial interests, being one of the commercial partners of the European institutions, prevails on the [divulging] for the public interest.'"

Comment Unban my account (Score 0, Offtopic) 504

This is directed at Paul Sams:

A few years ago my account was banned for botting through parts of the game that are terribly tedious. I am not admitting or denying guilt regarding this, but I do have two questions for someone in your position:

1) Can you unban accounts

and

2) Can you unban mine?

On a side note, (this might be more for Jeffrey Kaplan) make things less tedious! ;)

Thanks in advance!

Should Wikipedia Sell Advertising? 317

The Narrative Fallacy writes "The LA Times has an interesting story on the state of Wikipedia's finances and how with 300 million page views a day, the organization could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars if it sold advertising space. Without advertising the foundation has a tough time raising its annual budget of $4.6 million. The 45,000 or so individuals who contribute annually give an average of $33 each, so campaigns, which are conducted online, raise only about one-third of what's needed. As Wikimedia adds features to its pages, such as videos, costs will rise. 'Without financial stability and strong planning, the foundation runs the risk of needing to take drastic steps at some point in the next couple years,' said Nathan Awrich, a Wikipedia editor who supports advertising."

Linux PCs Discontinued at Wal-Mart Stores 278

eldavojohn writes "The $200 Linux PCs discussed earlier last year have been discontinued for sale at Wal-Mart's physical locations, though they will remain for sale at walmart.com. All this despite the systems repeatedly selling out. From the article, 'Paul Kim, brand manager for Everex, said selling the gPC online was "significantly more effective" than selling it in stores.'"
