Cell Chip Coming To the PC Via a PCI Express Card 164

arcticstoat writes with an excerpt from Custom PC: "After developing a brand new CPU architecture from the ground-up, you'd expect that Toshiba, Sony and IBM would have more uses for the Cell architecture than the PlayStation 3, and Toshiba has been quick to make use of the architecture's HD video transcoding abilities in its new Qosimo laptops. However, Leadtek is now taking Toshiba's efforts a step further by putting the chip onto a PCI-E card for desktop PCs. The WinFast PxVC1100 is based on Toshiba's SpursEngine SE1000 processor, which is a cut-down version of the Cell chip. The SpursEngine chip features four SPEs (synergistic processing elements) based on 128-bit RISC cores, along with H.264 and MPEG-2 codecs, but it doesn't contain its own CPU as the chip in the PS3 does. The chip is capable of encoding and decoding H.264, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video streams in hardware."

Submission + - Slowing Global Warming One Roof at a Time 2

Peace Corps Online writes: "Builders have known for decades that white roofs reflect the sun's rays and lower the cost of air conditioning but Hashem Akbari, a physicist with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, says a 1,000-square-foot white roof — the average size on an American home — can offset 10 metric tons of planet-heating carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Globally, roofs account for 25% of the surface of most cities, and pavement accounts for about 35%. If all were switched to reflective material in 100 major urban areas, it would offset 44 metric gigatons of greenhouse gases, more than all the countries on Earth emit in a single year and would offset more than 10 years of emissions growth (pdf), even without slashing industrial pollution. "I call it win-win-win," Akbari said. "First, a cooler environment not only saves energy but improves comfort. Second, cooling a city by a few degrees dramatically reduces smog. And the third win is offsetting global warming.""

Journal Journal: Kentucky tries to take gambling domains

The Governor of Kentucky has announced that a judge has ordered that 141 Internet gambling domain names be transferred to the state. I don't quite know where to start on this, nor where to end.
