Comment Where are these companies (Score 2) 98

Subject says it all. Where are these companies? I would love to have a WFH position, with only occasional travel (covid notwithstanding).

$current_company has been rather inconsistent and horrible with their covid response, we're all in the office, no masks, and let's just say some company leaders have opinions that they're welcome to have, should keep to themselves if they are company officers. Right or wrong, what they say reflects on the company.

If I do find a new position, the exit interview will be interesting. I don't want more money, vacation, etc. I want something that they probably cannot give. I want behavior change.

In the old days, that's how I solved my access drought in the early 90's.

Local Telenet/SprintNet dialup (X.25) had some open hosts that let you telnet anywhere. Used that for a few years until I was able to secure more reliable access.

You didn't dare share it with anyone for fear of it be abused, discovered, and the hole "plugged."

Those were the days. ;)

Another reason why that as I've gotten older - time is worth more than money.

Spend your money, enjoy yourself, while at least saving a bit for retirement. All your assets will be eaten up anyway.

Estate plan when you're young so the bloodsuckers don't get everything you've worked for. .... and lastly, while I'm still of sound mind (before I'd need nursing home care), feed me a beer laced with something I can't taste and just let me go to sleep.

A few thoughts on working from home ...

I would love to work from home. Less wear and tear on car, no worry of winter, etc. In fact, I would take small to moderate paycut to be able to do so.

Regarding "striking out on your own" - that's all well and good, however in the USA at least, you need healthcare. Getting healthcare outside of a group plan (i.e. employer sponsored) is not cheap. To me, that's another argument for universal healthcare or whatever you want to call it. Decouple it from employment and you'll see lots of folks be "freelancers" or "small business owners."

It would also force companies to come up with different and/or better benefits, as they could no longer use healthcare as the proverbial carrot.
