Journal Journal: Rumsfeld's Rules (online, and not online
Donald Rumsfeld wrote an interesting 13 page document when he joined the Bush administration in 2001.
He based this on his 20+years in Government, and titled the document, Rumsfeld's Rules. David Brin's Blog (http://davidbrin.blogspot.com) discusses his rules (here: http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/2006/04/catching-up-on-science-and-other-cool.html )
and requested that the public start to DISCUSS these rules.

My take? As someone old (and lucky) enough to have seen Andy perform (LIVE) on Saturday Night Live (twice), as well as watching the infamous "fight" on the ABC "Friday" show (on TV).
I say: ANDY WOULD actually be one of the FEW geniuses capable of successfully pulling this off.

As a geek opening a coffee house with internet connectivity, I feel I have a unique insight into both the coffe world, as well as the tech world.
Essentially, the problem is stated correctly. THERE IS NO BUSINESS model for selling wifi access alone.
My solution? I'm giving it away in my cafe, as a SERVICE to let my CUSTOMERS profit.
However, I'm NOT braindead.
I am giving away 2 hrs per device per day.
I think that's generours enough.
If someone wants more time (such as someone camped out in a tent in my parking lot, or the folks who live above my store), they can pay me as an ISP for guaranteed monthly bandwidth.
Neither fish nor fowl, I know, but the best and fairest plan going forward.
I even decided that I should have a commercial priced service too, so I have 3 levels:
free (2hrs/day)
residential (30/month
commercial (70/month)
