Comment old school engineering approach (Score 2) 216

Some years ago I worked in a very large firm which had corporate temperature policies. Thermostats in our work area had actual key locks on them to prevent us from changing the temperature.

The fellow in the cube next to me brought in his own thermostat and ran wires to it, and kept it hidden in his desk. For weeks the building maintenance guys kept coming by and resetting the thermostat...

Comment Smell ? (Score 1) 456

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned smell.
Dogs can detect explosives, some diseases, bed bugs, and a million other things that are impossible for us.
And of course the ability to track where people/things have been would be amazing. Not to mention how it would effect are appreciation of food/drink.

Well... It's a many-body problem. It can't be solved analytically. In molecular physics (since they are all multi-body systems) you often make a bunch of assumpions about the motion of the nuclei not effecting the electrons,
which is pretty close to true at normal energies,
visible light, for instance. Pumping the energy up into this range gets to the point where you can't ignore the nuclear motion, so you get into areas where the usual equations don't work. Having real measurements of what is going on helps the theorist see which of the things he has been ignoring are important, and which aren't.
