Feed Net Effect Of Energy-Saving Early Switch To Daylight Savings Time: Nothing (techdirt.com)

While the early switch to daylight savings didn't cause many real problems, it was something of a nuisance. Part of the supposed rationale for the early switch -- in addition to reduced crime, less traffic accidents and increased economic activity was to save energy, because there will be more light in the evening and people will use less lighting. Of course, there's less light in the morning, so people's power needs then will increase. So what was the end effect of this early shift? Essentially nothing, as several large utilities say they haven't seen any noticeable change in their customers' power consumption. But don't let that detract from the warm, fuzzy feeling you get knowing American politicians are serious in their hunt for ways to conserve energy.

Journal Journal: Cockroach Invasions of 2007 1

Cockreach season has already begun, infesting tight corners of kitchen dishwashers and crawling all over the plates that I eat off of. This morning I found two large cockroachs in the dishwasher crawling around, nearly sending me into a state of shock. I later finally had the guts to pull out the necessary utensils for eating a bowl of cereal (not to mention having to wash them manually in the sink just to be sure they were absolutely clean). How do you deal with your insectofestations? What

Submission + - Will lack of DX10 on XP spur OpenGL development?

Sparr0 writes: "Since Microsoft's announcement that DirectX 10 will not be released for Windows XP, which means no Shader Model 4.0 and no Geometry Shaders, I have been waiting for news of game developers switching to OpenGL in order to get the best graphics on the best hardware on the most popular gaming OS... But there is nary a whisper of such. Will such a shift occur, even if only in small amounts? When? Why not? It is probably safe to say that Unreal Tournament 3 (AKA UT2007) will have OpenGL as an option in Windows, but that is both unsurprising and also a long way off. Ditto for Quake Wars, and most anything else that we already knew was going to have a native Linux clients. But where are all of the other big names with Windows-only offerings? Why haven't we heard from Valve, Blizzard, Sony, or EA, to name a few?"

Submission + - SkyQube: A very clever box

Max Matakino writes: Cnet.co.uk has stumbled across a very interesting box indeed out at CeBIT, "The SkyQube Squared from Qool Labs is a VoIP gateway that enables you to forward calls and messages made to your mobile phone or landline via SkypeOut to another number anywhere in the world". This means that if you receive a call to your house phone while you're in China, you can get it forwarded to a Chinese cell phone or telephone for the relatively very cheap price of a SkypeOut call. I'm guessing wireless carriers aren't going to be happy about this one.
