Comment Re:A SPEC member complaining about benchmarks? (Score 0) 72

Some companies really don't like it when they perform poorly on SPEC results. I can think of 2 back in the day; Sun Microsystems was doing pretty good with the E10k until the IBM P4 Series 690 arrived on the scene and zoomed past the SPARC platform. Sun suddenly had no use for SPEC's benchmarks. Another was EMC, they took their toys and went home when they were losing badly to Hitachi, 3Par and HP EVA.

Comment Space Command - This is actually a GOOD THING! (Score 0) 190

I realize people are getting caught up with the fact Trump is involved. But a centralized Space Command is absolutely necessary. I've worked for both DoD and research centers involved with missile defense and there is no cohesive unity in our defense with so many organizations with differing objectives and postures. There needs to be a single command that will coordinate mission and communication with all the defense-related organizations.

Agree completely, this is a no-brainer. The trade value for most of the Android phones people are eager to trade in will most likely be older and not worth much at all. So give them a few dollars and sell them an expensive iPhone 6. There may be some sticker shock though if the people attempting to trade in their phones are not familiar with the cost of iPhones. Don't worry though, they can hang out at the Genius Bar while they get over the shock.

I've experienced this before where the round-trip flight was a fraction of the one-way, and I only needed a one-way trip. I did make the mistake of telling the ticketing agent at the airport that I didn't plan on using the return trip ticket and got the third-degree. So I learned my lesson to never mentioned it again. Of course now most everything is done online. Strange though they have such absurd pricing, especially if you're purchasing with little time in advance.

Not to mention, these higher-end hotels also usually charge for parking, breakfast, and have a horrible selection of TV channels yet tons of pay-per-view options. Having stayed in many Marriott hotels around the U.S., I can vouch they usually charge these extra fees in their higher-end hotels. Usually downtown or near an airport.

Touch LCD display would be awesome. You could play online MMO style. A war strategy game like Road to Moscow online would be really cool. Tons of other games as well, but similar theme. It would be a real-time war (terrain and armies) command center. Were that the case, I's shell out $8,500 form one.

haha funny skit. Here's the full paragraph:

Life was a carnival! We entertained ourselves! We didn't need moooovin' pitchurrrres. In my day, there was only one show in town -- it was called "Stare at the sun!" ... That's right! You'd sit in the middle of an open field and stare up at the sun till your eyeballs burst into flames! And you thought, "Oh, no! Maybe I shouldn't've stared directly into the burning sun with my eyes wide open." But it was too late! Your head was on fire and people were roastin' chickens over it. ... And that's the way it was and we liked it!

Really depends on the type of contract work they are doing. Working for a company like CSC who manages contract and pays employee benefits, a W-2 contractor that works for what is basically a head-hunting company that provide no benefits or a 1099 contractor (essentially self-employed.) Having done all three I can say a skilled IT worker (W2 or 1099) in NYC should be getting no less than $60/hr. I realize the market has slowed down considerably since the heydays of the late 90's, but rates have rebounded the last few years. We had something similar happen at T Rowe Price where all the contractors were let go to save money. Most were charging over $100/hr.

I'm thinking back to 1993-1994 when SGI had killer workstations that had some nifty innovative features with the best GUI for Unix workstations. Hell, the best GUI for all workstations at the time. We used to manage a few hundred of them along with Suns and Alphas. It's funny looking back that Sun survived and SGI and Alpha didn't. Alpha and SGI were like the BMWs and Mercedes of the workstations and servers, where Sun was like a used Ford. But SGI went to their WNT strategy and took a nosedive. Hard to compete with 2k workstations (at the time) with ones that cost over 10k.
