Koestler's Darkness at Noon is an outstanding book. In my opinion Orwell took alot from Koestler when writing 1984. But I think that Darkness at Noon pulls heavily from actual events during the Russian Revolutions, the rise of Lenin and communism, and the rise of Stalin.

Whether or not he is more profetic or more a "facts reporter" (he was a war correspondent during his life I believe) is debatable like everything i guess. But regardless I reccomend the book!
