You didn't need to upgrade to the silver package to get lost coast. It is freely available to anyone that owns HL2. I bought the retail version (equivalent to bronze) and can play it.
Also, many people have been able to play the game with videocards similar to yours. May just have to turn down a few more settings than you're used to.
