I tried Boxee once on my iMac, but I really couldn't figure out what exactly people love about it so much. I'm having trouble recalling details, but essentially, it seemed to have "channels" of which the only interesting one was content from Hulu. Since I can already access Hulu with a browser, without having to install this media app with a goofy UI, I was a bit nonplussed.

Boxee also installed a daemon that took over the input from my Apple remote, which I was sorta pissed about.

A user named Teri, IBM explains, would be given a girl avatar, while a user named Terry would be provided with a boy avatar. The three IBM 'inventors' were stymied by users named Pat, who as a result will be assigned a 'generic, genderless human figure image as his or her avatar.' Way to honor that significant-technical-content patent pledge, Big Blue!"

Why does anyone at Microsoft think this is relevant now? Vista came out over a year and a half ago. Too little too late doesn't even begin to describe this. The conventional wisdom on Vista is that it sucks. That may change somewhat over the coming months/years, but in short, better luck next time MS.

Firefox 2.0 Wins Phishfight Against IE7 181

An anonymous reader writes "A new study that pitted the anti-phishing technology in Firefox 2.0 against that of IE7 generated some interesting results. From the Washingtonpost.com story: 'Firefox blocked 243 phishing sites that IE7 overlooked, while IE7 locked 117 sites that Firefox did not.' Microsoft responded by pointing to its own supposed comparison study that put it in front of Mozilla and others in phish fighting, but the story notes: '3Sharp, the company that authored the Microsoft study, clearly state on their site that their goal in creating 3Sharp was "to use the robustness, flexibility, and sheer native capabilities of the Microsoft communication and collaboration technologies to enhance the business of our customers."'"

MSN Music Purchases Not Compatible with Zune 453

lewiz writes "The BBC is reporting that music purchased at MSN Music will not play on the new Zune music player." From the article: "The problem has arisen because tracks from the MSN Music site are compatible with the specifications of the Plays For Sure initiative. This was intended to re-assure consumers as it guaranteed that music bought from services backing it would work with players that supported it. MSN Music, Napster, AOL Music Now and Urge all backed Plays For Sure as did many players from hardware makers such as Archos, Creative, Dell and Iriver. In a statement a Microsoft spokesperson said: 'Since Zune is a separate offering that is not part of the Plays For Sure ecosystem, Zune content is not supported on Plays For Sure devices.'"
