What's even more enigmatic is this. "Mobile Light Force", which we all lovingly know as Gunbird, actually HAD AN ARCADE RELEASE IN THE UNITED STATES. And it was in English. Albiet not very GOOD English at times...(quote: "I left to you, Ace. Show the one to eyes.")...but English nonetheless. Hell XS could have even taken the English text directly without fixing the grammatical errors. The issue with the screen modes...well the Japanese PSX port of Gunbird (which was done by Atlus...ok how come Atlus didn't port this game themselves?...better yet HOW COME ATLUS ONLY GAVE THE U.S. ONE FRICKIN CAVE ARCADE SHOOTER RELEASE ESP RA.DE AND NO PORTS I'll sheddep now) didn't have vertical (TATE) mode, I think that was exclusive to the Sega Saturn port. But I'm pretty sure that it had something similar to the "Original 1" mode in Gunbird 2 (where you could see the whole playing field, albiet at a small resolution)..the whole "wobbling screen" thing makes that game unplayable. Simple as that. ESPECIALLY when playing as Yuan Nang. ...And WTF was with the renaming of the characters? Ash becomes "Jason Last"? Valpiro becomes "MLF-2000"? Tetsu becomes "John Suarez"? And yet Marion and Yuan Nang keep their names? Makes perfect sense, dosen't it..agh. I'll take my hat off to Atari though. They actually took the time in making Ikaruga a quality product, to be enjoyed by shooter fans and those who don't even like the genre. Hopefully Infogrammes (or Atari, if they do decide to change their companies name to that) will do us the honor of porting quality games in the future.
