So you're saying that gamma rays are not considered radioative radiation even though it is often produced from nuclear reactions such as that from an atomic bomb?
Besides, from TFA: "The role of melanin in microorganisms living in high electromagnetic radiation fluxes is even more intriguing when the pigment is considered from a paleobiological perspective." So it would seem that the particular radiation they used in the research is an EM radiation as well.
