Journal M.C. Hampster's Journal: Survivor: Pearl Islands - Episode 7 13

In the words of Amber from Survivor 2: O...M...G

All I can say is wow. That was quite an episode from last night. Producer Mark Burnett threw in a twist that has probably been the biggest change of rules in Survivor since the original "twist" back in Africa. For those who didn't see it, Drake and Morgan arrived at a challenge only to be greeted by the third tribe of "Outcasts". This new tribe consisted of the people who have previously been voted off the show. The challenge? Get yourself through a series of jail cells. If the Outcasts beat your tribe, you have to vote someone off and they get to replace that member with one of their own. So if they beat just Drake, Drake votes off someone and gets a replacement from the Outcasts. Same with Morgan. If they beat both teams, two people who have previously been voted off get to rejoin the show.

So what does this mean for the game? Probably not much. It appears as if the existing members of both tribes aren't really happy about the twist. While Jeff did say the new members will be immune for the first episode they are back so they have a fair shot at weaseling their way back into the game, I'm guessing both new members will get voted off as soon as possible.

Andrew was especially ticked off at the turn of events. If I was on the show, I think I would be too. You work hard to get where you are only to see a rather unSurvivorish twist that allows people to get back into the game. While it makes for good television, it does seem a bit unfair, even for Mark Burnett.

So who does Drake and Morgan vote off? Well, Drake is up first and they vote Shawn off. I'm not sure why they didn't go with Jon. Being that Shawn voted with Rupert, Christa and Sandra in the last TC when they needed his vote, and Jon didn't, I'm not sure why they kept Jon. I'm guessing it has something to do with work around the camp. As for Morgan, we have another Survivor first. Osten officially gave up. There was not even an official vote. Jeff just checked with each of the tribe members and made sure they would give Osten his wish. I say good riddance. You have thousands of people applying to get on this show, and this guy gets on and gives up. Very bad television.

So what's happening next week? Look's like we'll see who the Outcasts are going to send into the game. Will we have a merge? Who knows. The schedule for the show has been thrown off since effectively no one was voted off last night if you include the additional two members that will be replacing the two people voted off.

So what are everyone's thoughts? Was this a good twist? Do we have a merge? Who do the Outcasts move into the game?

I'm guessing Burton will be back with all the fuss the editing made about him. Plus the Outcasts will probably feel like he deserves to be back on with how instrumental he was to their win.

  • That's why i won't watch. You have a show where people vote each other out of a group rather than banding together for survival- and being rewarded for it. Where unkindness and backstabbing make for good TV. And where someone returning after being voted out s greeted with... claims of unfairness?

Yes, they voted the person out. But how is it unfair for them to get a second chance, in a show that is unfair to all of them from the start?

Granted i don't know all the rules, but i know enough to know that the

    • See, I disagree that all of these people are at their worst. They're under the most adverse conditions they're ever likely to experience in their entire lives. And yet the vast majority of them stay very humane and deal well with each other. Yes, there are certainly a few bad apples (they make the show interesting, after all!), but most of the folks are pretty cool. Perhaps there's a bit of strategizing going on, but I have seen far more people who "play it straight" get farther than the hard-core schemers.
      • So, having watched it (the entire Season 2 in Australia, and a bit of Africa and Thailand, and so far, nearly all of this one), I disagree that these folks are at their worst. These are folks that are at their best under the worst of circumstances. Some turn out to be devious, but others stand out as shining examples of truly good people. Watching those people do so well helps reinforce my faith in humanity!

Well said. And to add to that, I think that Survivor is the only "reality" show on TV that is worth
  • I would have written a slightly more lengthy post, but you got to the core of the matter, and your thoughts echo mine. I wish Osten had gone out long ago. Was it just me, or did Jeff himself seem pretty pissed off at Osten?

The twist was interesting, but you, me, and my wife, all agree that it was incredibly unfair. I can't for a minute imagine that the Outcasts were living in conditions as rough as Drake and Morgan. One look at the cleanliness of their skin and hair gives that away.

    The Jon/Shawn thing is
  • So I have a question regarding this Outcast tribe. It's easy to vote someone off because you increase your chances of winning, but the Outcast tribe is going to vote 2 people back on. Wouldn't they all like to get back on? Obviously you won't be able to vote for yourself but what does each member have to gain for voting someone else back on. Maybe revenge for all, maybe they will get cut in on the win if the Outcast member wins. Any thoughts?
    • My initial thoughts were that this was a one time shot for the Ousters to get back on. My wife believed that this would continue for longer, meaning the Outcasts will be around for longer. GMHowell seems to have the same belief. I'm not sure what will be happening with their tribe.

But yes, there seems to be a problem in the voting for the Ousters. I guess two people could agree to vote for each other (since I'm sure they can't vote for themselves). But if three couples did that, it would be a six wa

    • I see it as like the final jury vote. People will tell the others voting how they are so good and such. Think of it like an early "vote for who you want to win the million and the top two get a fighting chance." It's just like the loser board in a billiards competiton. The winners of the first round move on to the second round, but maybe you lost in the first round and you lost to the number one ranked player in the world, this doesn't mean you should finish last as maybe you're just the second best pla
    • With six Outcast members, it could be a standard type vote, except you write down four names instead of one. One wouldn't vote their own name to be left out, and would then be picking the one person they want to come with them. The least two 'losers' win.

After the two Outcasts make the team, in a merge, they would hold 20% of the vote. They are granted one round of immunity each. Could then hold 25% of the vote. If they get a turncoat, perhaps Jon, then the Outcasts have 38% of the vote. That's good odds

  • Like I said, those producers *really* know how to fuck with people!! I think it'd be fascinating to see a really in-depth psychological profile of Mark Burnett, 'cause he's gotta be more of a devious, scheming SOB than we've ever seen even on THIS show!!

I love the way they're playing with the whole Pirate theme -- the whole concept of anarchy and chaos, and the rule being that there are NO rules... It is *definitely* keeping the show fresh and interesting, both for the players and the viewers.
