Comment AI Art Probably uses Copyrighted Art (Score 1) 59

Afaik, AI Art tools have not been able to declare that the art used to build their models were copyright-free or that they otherwise had the rights to use them. Given that, I would whole-heartedly agree that images generated from these models, like in the post, should not be copyright-able. These images can still be used as reference or as 'models' or tools for traditionally copyright-able work. But just entering in the suggestion shouldn't be the copyright imo.

even though in the past with no NN rules almost nothing happened, and when it did was shut down quickly (like torrent throttling).

I hate when a question is framed this way. As if we can only act reactively to a problem to feel accomplished.
Preventing obvious abuses should always be a goal when writing legal policy.
There have been abuses in the past. I'd encourage you to look them up.

I think it's worth noting that the only way the Rebels knew where the port was, was because R2-D2 made it back with the Death Star blueprints. Considering how incredibly difficult that should be (and was since they had to escape the Death Star itself as well). The trench run just otherwise couldn't be possible.

Why You Should Be More Interested In Mars Than the Olympics 409

New submitter hugeinc sends this quote from an article by author Andrew Kessler: "Next week, while we're all watching NBC, a nuclear-powered, MINI-Cooper-sized super rover will land on Mars. We accurately guided this monster from 200 million miles away (that's 7.6 million marathons). It requires better accuracy than an Olympic golfer teeing off in London and hitting a hole-in-one in Auckland, New Zealand. It will use a laser to blast rocks, a chemical nose to sniff out the potential for life, and hundreds of other feats of near-magic. Will these discoveries lead us down a path to confirming life on other planets? Wouldn't that be a good story that might make people care about science?"
