How can any rational person believe its "an election stunt," when they haven't even talked about it, and its a small part of the $250M deal that they haven't even talked about or touted, and MOST crucially they couldn't even tout it until AFTER the election, because it can't get passed before. You're saying they planned an election stunt for after the election. That is peak TDS.

I concur, however will add that the Nest stats have their own unique power problems that we donâ(TM)t encounter with any other stats. Turns out they draw way too much current, which would be ok with just one in the house, but if you have zones (and thus require multiple thermostats) they have issues without additional power. Even in the context of brand new top end furnaces, Depending on whatever else is running on that 24v common, Iâ(TM)ve seen them fail to output sufficient voltage to energize heat when there are just 2 of them. 3 of them never works on common common. Which is fine. I can add a transformer and jump power to them, but the real bitch is when you just have 2, and they claim theyâ(TM)re working, but theyâ(TM)re not. Learned that lesson.

Thatâ(TM)s what we install for homes with any level of sophistication. And the primary reason is actually compatibility with their EIM tech (uses digital communication so only needs 2 wires, otherwise many applications require 7-8 wires to the thermostat which isnâ(TM)t present in most homes), along with their proprietary Redlink network (RF) to connect to outdoor sensors), and finally their interoperability with smart multi zone control boards. You need all of these components to set up an efficient automated AC, heat pump, auto switchover to 2nd heat source (gas), with multiple automated zone dampers. And they âoelearnâ how much it takes to satisfy each zone over time and modulate accordingly. Home builders would only use Nest if they want a pretty and âoegreenâ thing on the wall that does nothing special except for shutting off your AC when you want it most.

In other words, wouldnâ(TM)t it make sense to forward to all OTHER nodes (all nodes except the one it was received from)? Or is this the fault of each node using broadcast notation? Thanks

Wrong, wrong, wrong. I'll speak to the legal angle and see if you can extrapolate from that. Look up the definition of theft - as in, the statutory definition in your state. In most states, theft is defined something like "taking something which doesn't belong to with the INTENTION of PERMANENTLY depriving the owner of said property." Let's see how good my memory is on this using my state... MN statute 609.52s2: "intentionally and without claim of right takes, uses, transfers, conceals or retains possession of movable property of another without the other's consent and with intent to deprive the owner permanently of possession of the property" Yea I did pretty good. Taking something temporarily is not theft because intent is key. I actually learned this when I was younger and my step dad took my shotgun claiming he was scared of my state of mind or something after a verbal dispute. I called the cops out and of course they didn't want to side with the 20 year old guy and said they wouldn't press charges because "he said he'll give it back to you when he's comfortable." Seriously. Of course I flipped and said that's ridiculous and made the cops get it from him and give it back to me within a day. But then I looked up the statute and learned that is what the statute said, and it makes sense... However I'm sure court precedents establish it must be a reasonable amount of time. The more you know.
