Keep in mind that TopGear, while often entertaining, has a certain "style" with editing footage together to convey whatever message they feel like conveying. Really though, how often do you drive >200 miles in a day? Typically you're not going to completely deplete the battery every day, and you're going to be leaving the car charging overnight, so for most drivers that would work out quite well.

Lapzilla writes: "Body-scanning machines that show images of people underneath their clothing are being installed in 10 of the nation's busiest airports in one of the biggest public uses of security devices that reveal intimate body parts. The Transportation Security Administration recently started using body scans on randomly chosen airline passengers in Los Angeles, Baltimore, Denver, Albuquerque and New York's Kennedy airport. Airports in Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas and Miami will be added this month. Reagan National Airport near Washington starts using a body scanner Friday. A total of 38 machines will be in use within weeks."

The student was in class, working on an assignment that necessitated using a browser. The teacher instructed him to stop using Firefox and to do his classwork, to which the student responded that he was doing his classwork using a 'better' browser (it is unclear whether the computer was the student's own computer or not). The clueless teacher (who called the rogue program 'Firefox.exe') ordered him to detention." Update: 12/17 20:09 by SM One of the school officials was nice enough to contact us and let us know this is a hoax. If you are planning on calling the school please refrain from doing so, I'm sure they have had enough excitement for one day.

EA Executive Cites Need For More Innovation 84

The Wall Street Journal has comments from John Riccitiello, EA's new CEO, who has an interesting observation: maybe we should make more original games. "In his first in-depth comments since taking the job in April, John Riccitiello says he worries that the Redwood City, Calif., company and others in the industry make too many games that lack innovation. He says EA and others need both to push more aggressively beyond traditional audiences to court 'casual' consumers and to experiment more with new sales approaches -- outside the norm of selling $50 to $60 discs with 40-hour games that he says few players ever finish. 'We're boring people to death and making games that are harder and harder to play,' Mr. Riccitiello said in an interview." Perhaps looking beyond yearly updates to established franchises might be a way to go too. We've seen EA form a casual studio, re-organize the flowchart, adopt the Wii wholeheartedly ... does anyone see EA actually reinventing itself, or is this too little too late?

Nope. You're thinking of distributed.net, which did cryptography research. SETI came after, and gave people a pretty screensaver (ooh!), and everyone thinks that the SETI client was number 1 because it's the first one that they heard of. Nope, you're thinking of GIMPS, or the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, which searches for Mersenne primes. distributed.net came after, and gave people lots of things better of GIMPS, and you think the distributed.net client was number 1 because you forgot to do a little research.
