Actually, the way this generally works now is that you stop paying, but your character remains in storage indefinitely. In EverQuest, they only guarantee characters for 3 months or so, but I've known of people who have stopped playing for a year or more then started paying for their account again and their characters are still there, fully equipped. I don't know if Blizzard will do occasional character purges, but I haven't heard anything to suggest that so far. So you can cancel your account for your month-long vacation, and not have to worry about losing your characters. But,they haven't officially said anything at this point.
