Bill Gates inexplicably goes after a charity designed to help poor kids in developing countries get a bead on technology and computing. One could probably argue about self-interest coloring one's views, I suppose. Oh yeah, here's the article.

One could argue that he has a perfectly valid point about the pointlessness in handing out a barely usable computer for charity just because it's really cheap....

  I guess we have different opinions about "barely usable". Then again, we're both guessing, since there is as yet no working prototype. I suggest that if the laptop were Windows-based, Mr. Gates would sing a different tune, but YMMV. In fact, I know that MS were interested in OLPC when the OS was not yet chosen.
