Comment Montana Constitution 1972 - BobCampbell (Score 3, Insightful) 120

In 1972 Robert (Bob) Campbell - Delegate to Montana Constitution - discussed the proposed constitutional provision for "the Environment and Natural Resources ." "The state and each person shall maintain and improve an environment in Montana for present and future generations." Bob Campbell addressed this provision and asked and wondered why anyone would just have "An environment to maintain and improve?" Bob Campbell then proposed and hoped the delegates would add "A Clean and Healthful Environment." to the provision. It passed 100 per cent. by everyday working Montanans. No elected representative to the Montana House or Senate was allowed to be a delegate. Comment re: Business ethics & eating alone (Score 1) 475

Years ago business people were surveyed about their experience traveling from one place to the next. When the results came back...most said that drinking and sleeping alone was not a problem. Eating alone - was a problem for most "experienced" business people...and they also said they never wanted to discuss "business" over lunch or dinner. The survey also found that most newer sales people or young business folks always tried to conduct business over lunch and "get a deal" as well as the write off for lunch/dinner. Experienced business people would rather conduct business away from lunch or dinner. The experienced people who never liked eating alone - rather converse about family and other social or sporting activities in order to establish a better business and working relationship during the 9-12 and 1-5 hours. Eating alone does not help anyone feel like they are part of a community...and business talk should be kept out of the conversation! ...Compliments are like perfume or cologne - Enjoy - don't swallow !

Satellite-Based Laser Hunts Woodpeckers From Space 53

University of Idaho scientists have figured out a more effective way to track woodpecker populations than following the incessant laughter. They're using a laser onboard NASA's Icesat spacecraft to determine where the birds might be living. From the article: "NASA's Icesat satellite was initially intended for measuring glacial surfaces at the Earth's poles but has proven to be quite effective in measuring vegetation also. The satellite's laser bounces off of forest canopies, tree trunks and the ground making important characteristics about the forest easily measurable. For example, forest density is determined by the relative amount of light returned versus that which is returned from the ground. Once ideal woodpecker locations are identified 'we actually conduct ground-based woodpecker surveys in these locations as well to verify it,' says team-member Patrick Adam."

One Night Stands May Be Genetic 240

An anonymous reader writes "So, he or she has cheated on you for the umpteenth time and their only excuse is: 'I just can't help it.' According to researchers at Binghamton University, they may be right. The propensity for infidelity could very well be in their DNA. In a first of its kind study, a team of investigators led by Justin Garcia, a SUNY Doctoral Diversity Fellow in the laboratory of evolutionary anthropology and health at Binghamton University, State University of New York, has taken a broad look at sexual behavior, matching choices with genes and has come up with a new theory on what makes humans 'tick' when it comes to sexual activity. The biggest culprit seems to be the dopamine receptor D4 polymorphism, or DRD4 gene. Already linked to sensation-seeking behavior such as alcohol use and gambling, DRD4 is known to influence the brain's chemistry and subsequently, an individual's behavior."

While it's true that Sweden is responsible for unleashing IKEA and ABBA on humanity, not everything they produce is terrible. Their thieves are some of the most considerate in the world. An unnamed professor at Umeå University received a USB stick with all his data after his laptop was stolen. From the article: "The professor, who teaches at Umeå University in northern Sweden, was devastated when ten years of work stored on his laptop was stolen. Pope Says Technology Causes Confusion Between Reality and Fiction 779

Pope Benedict XVI has warned that people are in danger of being unable to discern reality from fiction because of new technologies, and not old books. "New technologies and the progress they bring can make it impossible to distinguish truth from illusion and can lead to confusion between reality and virtual reality. The image can also become independent from reality, it can give birth to a virtual world, with various consequences -- above all the risk of indifference towards real life," he said.
