Journal KshGoddess's Journal: POD. GAIM. Unadulterated crap. 11

First and foremost, the company I work for is assigning us to the POD, which should be spelled POS, because that's what it is. First, they allow us internal MSN messenger accounts. Now, they decide that's too usable, and they bring in the POD. Some sort of encrypted IM, with every conversation logged. It's about twice the size of the msn messenger, and has the stupides, goofiest smileys. Ugh.

So I figured with that crap on my windows box that I'd give GAIM a try. Ugh. It's equally as big, and twice as clunky. Maybe I've not found it in the config, but the bottom 1/5th of the conversation box has some sort of gui toolbar thing that is as big as the 'type your message here' box. But it works, I guess.

I like Miranda on windows. The 'buddy list' box takes up rather little real estate, and, well, it just works. It's a little clunky, but... sigh. It works as described, and is usable.

For some odd reason, my words have come back. Yay! Now I can get back to what I was doing. Being a pain in the ass. :D

Seriously, though, I find that writing with a pencil on paper works the best for me; when I transcribe, sometimes things get added or changed, but for the most part, having the pencil in my hand works really well for me... Of course, it would help if I knew where my *favorite* pencil is (mechanical, 0.7mm, translucent orange and purple side-clicker), but I'll make do with the green and blue version.

I plan on transcribing another 2000 words from this notebook at the end of the week, when I have time to sit down and do so. Finally.

    • Better, but still rather clunky. I understand the whole system-tray thing; I do that all the time; but there's no way for it to get my attention when someone's talking at me when the conversation window's open. I've missed several important messages that way.

        • sound... ah, yeah. right. at work. on these pieces of crap.

i actually prefer that things DON'T raise window/change focus from what I'm doing. It pisses me off. I usually have some logic to what I'm doing.

ie, if i've got something urgent (say, WORK) to do, most IM can wait. But it would be nice to know that someone said something, so that they're not waiting for an hour after i'm done for them to get the rest of the story.

mn sounds like the most likely candidate for me to putz with.
  • trillian is so good I dropped $25.00 for the pro version.

It's good. And I tried Gaim. It looked like Free software.

    IOW, really poorly done.

    trillian is done right.
    • Methinks it's a question of aesthetics--I had EXACTLY the opposite reactions to Trillian (which eats my buddy list on a regular basis and barfs whem people send me some messages) and GAIM (which is customizable and small and unobtrusive and yay! once you figure out the controls)
  • Gah! If they weren't so fragile, I'd never use anything over .3... .5 is the maximum that you can get reasonable writing out of. .7 is way too thick... Of course, I use ultrafine pens, too. I hate thick lines.
    • Personally I hate pencils and won't use them if I have a choice.
Mechanicals are tolerable, but still undesirable to me.

This is the last pen I'll ever need [styluscentral.com].
I've had mine for a few years.
It's the beautiful shade of blue (2nd from the left in picture on that site) and it writes great!

My wife seems to like this pen/pencil/stylus [styluscentral.com].

      • Gah. I do my best to avoid pens. Modern inks, at least in pens that are decently small points, run really badly. Besides, mechanical pencils can be erased, reloaded, and don't accidentally leak all over your good clothes. The only problem with pencils is that they get dull... that's why I like the .5 mechanicals. They're always sharp.

"My wife seems to like this pen/pencil/stylus."

I've already got one. :) The .5 is nice, it's good to have the stylus, but there isn't enough eraser, and the pen reall

        • Yeah, ben is a fan of the smallest-caliber lead, too. But my letters are really big, and his are tiny. His signature's about 1cm tall, because he likes finer-point pencils and pens.

I like the .7 because I have a heavy hand. Most .5's are too brittle for me to use. I like a few small ballpoint pens, though I am rather picky. The ballpoint pens HAVE to glide. I cant stand the skritchy-skritchy of a pen that's not engineered correctly.

I write in pencil, because even erasable inks, well, aren't. And I change
