Journal KshGoddess's Journal: Did I ever tell you how nice it is to have Synergy? 2
Ah, Synergy. How I love thee. Let me count the ways... um... Your crossing monitors on multiple platforms saves me from having to use the awful 2-port switchbox, and type 'scroll lock-scroll lock'. Your ability to be tunneled through ssh gives me the security that I crave. Your... um... cross-platform copy-paste (which usually works) lets my spirit run free!
Ok, so I've been running synergy for about... a month now. I have both a linux desktop (redhat 9) and a windows desktop (2000 pro). Side by side, I have two monitors. On the left (no, your OTHER left), I have Windows. On the right, I have Linux. One keyboard to rule them all, one mouse to, something something.
I was the hero of the group when I found it, installed it, and made it work. Yes, there are a couple of bugs in it, but for the most part, it keeps the annoying be-beeping noises to a minimum.
I'm running the 'server' bit on my linux box, and the 'client' bit on my windows box. Although it works either way, I have sshd on my linux box, and therefore I can tunnel using an ssh client (including puTTY) all of my keystrokes. And mouse movements, too, but I seriously doubt anyone's interested in those.
I was looking for the SGI-NT version of similar software (called TelEffect), but couldn't find it. The company, I believe, is out of business. This is similar in form and function. And it's free as in beer, as well as in speech.
The coolest thing, when it works, is that you can lock both screens at the same time. I prefaced it with 'when it works' because it has stopped working for no reason that I can find.
Edit: corrected link to synergy.
