I've made a fairly recent return to this site after being gone for many years, and I have to say I'm still not impressed. The act hasn't gotten any better and although I'm still reading comments not to many people seem to like/be interested in this beta. I'm not an active community member, I only made this account to post this, but you should probably listen to what your community members want, lest you lose the one's that you have left. Many, many corporations, groups, organizations etc. have put their ideas first over the input of their users and paid a price for it, so this beta thing should probably be dropped.
That said, I really don't know how this site manages to keep going. I come here partly out of nostalgia from when I used to come here daily to read, and partly to look for news I might have missed on Ars or Reddit. I generally read comments, though I really don't post. Years ago as a posting member, I wrote something that offended some uber neckbeard among your readership, who then trolled me through every comment on every article I made. As I looked for moderation or someone to fix the troll, found none. I got no response and no help with my troll. So I quit /. and found other (read better) sources for my tech news and tech related news. I don't expect that the problem has been fixxed, hell you don't even have a report button to give the appearance of giving a shit, and come beta if it is indeed bad I will probably quit this site again until I feel nostalgic enough to return or until the site finally goes belly up as it should have long ago.
There are other issues to be had as well. The accuracy and legitimacy of the articles posted should always be checked by the reader, something I would not expect since the articles themselves are picked by moderators from a pool of submissions. If your going to pick and choose what articles go up, make sure they are legitimate. I've also run into a couple editorials posing as articles, by a gentleman (read windbag asshole) by the name of Bennett. Is he someone's cousin, or friend, or butt buddy or something? Cause after skimming through one of his crappy editorials, and then the comments after him, no one seems to find much value to this guy, but he also seems to keep getting articles posted. Thats bad form for a discussion forum.
In general I find /. to be rife with moderator apathy and abuses. None of this is taking into account the more dated structure and somewhat feature lacking nature of the site. Perhaps if beta improves the site functionality, like dropping the difficult to follow threaded conversation model or adding that report button (and doing something with it) it might be improvement. I have a feeling its just going to cram more ads onto the screen though, or something equally asinine.
