Comment Canada needs affordable commuter EVs (Score 1) 430
I live in rural Saskatchewan. I understand that population wise my situation doesnâ(TM)t speak for too many people but from my point of view there a couple of things holding me back. Also Iâ(TM)ll preface this by admitting that I am a frugal (alright cheap) person. I donâ(TM)t buy brand new and I fix any vehicle issues I have myself.
First is the capability of an all around EV. Losing mileage in the winter, expensive 4 wheel versions and lack of charging infrastructure are all reasons not to own one here. It just doesnâ(TM)t make sense to have one as a main vehicle at this point. The extreme cold range issues and cost savings of fuel vs purchase price just donâ(TM)t add up for me yet. Iâ(TM)m not one to complain about waiting for a charge but chargers are almost non existent around here as well.
Second is the lack of affordable EVs. One thing I believe is that the automakers should start by pumping out commuter type EVs. Usually commuter vehicles are cheaper and simple get to work and back vehicles. At the right price point it would make sense to save the money on gas and have a monthly payment along with the benefit of having a newer vehicle. For me I currently have an old caravan that I keep running for far less than a monthly payment on a EV. And if it quits I can buy another cheap vehicle to keep it running.
You also have to look at people in a less than desirable financial situation. For them buying cheap and running a vehicle into the ground is cheaper than a new EV. If the incentive was there that you replace your monthly gas cost with a monthly EV payment perhaps that would change.
I do see things changing in all respects to EVs but it is just not there yet. And the fact that the trend for NA automakers is to make the biggest buck by selling bigger higher priced vehicles and not offer much on the low end smaller car side doesnâ(TM)t help.
Side note: I also agree with another post I read about the controls. Letâ(TM)s keep it simple. I donâ(TM)t want a big fancy fully automated EV with a big touch screen display. Give me some simplicity please.
