It's not a move from trains to cars, but rather from highly congested highways full of cars controlled by people (who are, as we know, liable to cause traffic jams just by stepping on the brake at the wrong moment) to a more-or-less fluidly moving highway full of cars controlled by the equivalent of a guide beam, hopefully maintaining optimal positioning and speed.

You can state whatever you like, but there's saying it and saying it, y'know? Carefully outlining that scholars disagree about the number of people killed during the Holocaust is one thing -- it may raise some hackles, but as long as you do it with all due scientific and academic diligence, you ought to be fine. If you spout nonsense a la "Hitler was an OK guy, and so were the Nazis, and they never killed that many people" you're basically declaring allegiance with an ideology that by its very nature is unconstitutional and which cannot be made congruent with the aims, goals and means of a modern democratic republic. THAT is the part that'll get you indicted. Even in America, free speech is not entirely free of consequences. In Germany, those consequences are more drastic, but they have little to do with the ACT of saying something, but rather with the implications of saying something that is unconstitutional.

Major Cache of Fossils Unearthed In Los Angeles 215

aedmunde sends along news from the LA Times: "A nearly intact mammoth, dubbed Zed, is among the remarkable discoveries near the La Brea Tar Pits. It's the largest known deposit of Pleistocene ice age fossils... in what might seem to be the unlikeliest of places — under an old May Co. parking lot in L.A.'s tony Miracle Mile shopping district. ...huge chunks of soil from the site have been removed intact and now sit in large wooden crates on the back lot... The 23 crates range... from the size of a desk to that of a small delivery truck... There were, in fact, 16 separate deposits on the site, an amount that, by her estimate, would have taken 20 years to excavate conventionally. ... Carefully identifying the edges of each deposit, her team dug trenches around them and underneath, isolating the deposits on dirt pedestals. After wrapping heavy plastic around the deposits, workers built wooden crates similar to tree boxes and lifted them out individually with a heavy crane. The biggest one weighed 123,000 pounds."

GDC - The Importance of Self-Publishing 34

Eric Zimmerman, head of the Gamelab development project, has announced on the eve of the Game Developer's Conference that they're moving to a self-published format. From the article: "I think we have something else to offer ... and we've decided that it's hard finding partners that share this kind of vision and that want to take the risks that we're talking about to really create new sorts of games. And additionally we're working in a field right now of online games with a downloadable distribution model, which means that we can self-publish. It's relatively straightforward for a small company to publish."

Futurama Returns 386

riflemann writes "Another 26 episodes of Futurama will shortly go into production! This news comes from none other than Billy West (voice of Fry) himself, in a short post to his own message board. No further details are available, except that it's likely to be on TV, not straight to DVD." The best news is that means fresh quotes for slashteam to hide in the source code.
