Austin Police Want Identities of Online Critics 320

An anonymous reader writes "The police chief in Austin, TX is not happy that people are voicing their disapproval of him via anonymous blog posts and comments. He claims that 'such posts erode public trust in the department.' The chief wants to find out who these people are and investigate and prosecute such posters for statements he deems defamatory and libelous. Interestingly, the article notes, 'the Associated Press has reported that most of the cases fail because statements of opinion are protected under the First Amendment.' One wonders if this is a legitimate problem that warrants public money to investigate, or whether it's that the people who deserve the most public scrutiny don't like it when others take issue with their job performance."

Students Call Space Station With Home-Built Radio 330

Pizzutz writes "Four Toronto college students have accomplished a technological feat that their teachers are calling a first. The Humber College seniors made contact with the International Space Station Monday with a radio system they designed and built themselves. School officials say that, to their knowledge, that's never been accomplished by students at the college level." Somewhat disappointingly, the students actually did have permission to make contact.

AMD Phenom II Overclocked To 6.5GHz 303

An anonymous reader writes "During CES a group of overclockers with access to liquid nitrogen and liquid helium for the extra boost of coldness cooled an AMD Phenom II X4 chip to -232 degrees Celsius. Once they got the chip cooled to this frigid temperature, they pushed the clock speed all the way up to 6.5GHz, which is a world record for a quad-core CPU, and then dished out an astonishing 45,474 3DMark05 score!"

Journal Journal: Been gone a long time

I've been reading back on some of these journals I've written and realised how much of a fool I've been so far in my life. It's not hard to see where I've fucked up, dropped the ball or just plain not followed through.

Oh the fuck well. Don't care. Next?

Journal Journal: How Green is that iPhone?

After one week in the market, nobody knows yet how green the iPhone is. Not a single word from Apple about any green features. Nothing about reducing toxic chemicals or encouraging recycling for old phones dumped for the iPhone. Due to the successful Green my Apple campaign Steve claimed: "Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors" on environmental issues. But the iPhone appears far beh

Journal Journal: I'm alive!

My poor, poor, neglected journal. How I've abused you so! I am guilty of the most heinous of offenses and now must face the most grave of punishments.

Or something like that. :-P

Soon I'll have a writeup about Shana and Matt's wedding, along with some details about what's been going on this summer.

In the meantime, random entertainment in my world:

Comment The importance of buying independant music (Score 5, Insightful) 1753

It's not a question of not buying CD's, it's a question of not buying CD's that are on RIAA labels. Speaking as someone who is a memeber of the independant music community, I can say that bands like ours could use all the support we could get, in order to try and find a place for ourselves and avoid what boils down to a Management Union. The more independant music you buy, the less power the RIAA has, whereas if you don't buy -any- music, then the balance of power stays the same, and believe it or not, you actually help fund their statistics of people not buying music due to piracy. And for the recrod, there are plenty of music labels that aren't members of the RIAA. For example, If you're into Punk, (My area of expertise) there is Street Anthem Records and Fat Wreck Records. Both are known for treating their bands with the level of dignity and respect (and revenue ) that performers aught to be due. What I'm saying is that it's necessary to go a step further than not supporting the RIAA. You have to support their enemy, which would be free and independant music organizations.

And now its time for my shameless self plug, since we don't have the billions of the RIAA backing us for their own exploitive purposes, and probably never will:

Journal Journal: Today's Rant Sponsored by Jealousy, Inc 1

I have a buddy back at school who is getting a kidney transplant next week. I asked a mutual friend for some crashspace so I could head up and wish him well, and give a general visit to my peeps in Rachacha. My friend whose place I was going to crash at said they'd have to check with their parents. Cool by me.

Journal Journal: Lamentation

I don't know what to lament.

Jeff thinks we should do a study in online lamentation. I'll see what I can do.

I have spent five years at college and not gotten a degree yet. SO my fault.
I have so far spent over $120,000 on school. My fault.
I am going to be indebted to my parents until I am 35. Oh Yeah. My Fault.

Journal Journal: Wiggedy Whack!!!

I finally used my gift certificate on Amazon for LOTR FOTR Super Extendo Platinum Monkeys Edition. I'm really looking forward to watchy watching that. I'm easily amused. I found myself listening to the TTT soundtrack today, and I need to not be doing that alone :-/ It's sorta depressing. At least it's good music, which brings out emotion, and is vibrant and very telling. Goodness.
