Comment The FCC has always been irrelevant (Score 0) 256

The FCC has never been anything but a drag on freedom, economic prosperity and technical innovation.

Without the FCC, companies would have created new technologies earlier to deal with the technical problems of a free-for-all airspace. There would have been less interference in corporate affairs (providing greater economic prosperity), and far greater freedom (no decency laws limiting speech).

Look around at other government agencies (other than the core responsibilities in millitary, judicial and police functions), and you'll see much the same story.

There was nothing wrong with Microsoft's use of those agreements. They involved neither force nor fraud.

For that to happen, Microsoft would have had to lie to the PC makers or threaten them in some physical, non-economic way.

i know mac os 7.6 through mac os 9 aren't easy ports, but we have macs around that will never run os x, yet will still be in active use 5-10 years from now. it's just the way things have to be for cash-strapped schools.

right now, m$ office and appleworks are the only viable choices. appleworks is out because it's not cross-platform. an oss alternative for all our old, crusty macs would be great.
