Submission + - Vuln BIOS rootkit preloaded in ~60% of new laptops (zdnet.com)

Keldrin_1 writes: Researchers Alfredo Ortega and Anibal Sacco, from Core Security Technologies, have discovered a vulnerability in the "Computrace LoJack for Laptops" software. This is a BIOS level application that calls home for instructions in case the laptop is ever lost or stolen. However, what the application considers "home" is subject to change. This allows the creation of malware that is capable of "infecting the BIOS with persistent code that survive reboots and reflashing attempts". Computers from Dell, Lenovo, HP, Toshiba, Asus, and others may be affected.

Submission + - "The Dog Ate My Homework" goes digital (corrupted-files.com) 1

Keldrin_1 writes: Almost everyone has, at one point or another, come up against a deadline that they just were not able to meet. A new website has arisen that promises to solve the problem by providing you with a 'completed project' that has mysteriously been corrupted over email and now can not be opened. Corrupted-files.com offers to cure all your homework and deadline woes for the low fee of $3.95 (soon to be $5.95). From the site:
"Who's to say your 5 sheet Excel file didn't get corrupted? Exactly! No one can! It's the perfect excuse to buy yourself extra time and not hand in a garbage project. Plagiarism is not the answer to procrastination. — Corrupted-Files.com is!"

Somehow, I can not see this as anything but cheating...

Submission + - Security Flaw Hits VAserv - Head of LxLabs Hangs

Keldrin_1 writes: The discovery of 24 security vulnerabilities may have contributed to the death of the chief of LxLabs. A flaw in the companies HyperVM software allowed data on 100,000 sites, all hosted by VAserv, to be destroyed. The HyperVM solution is popular with cheap web hosting services and the attacks are easy to reproduce, which could lead to further incidents.
