Comment Summary Fail (Score 4, Interesting) 90

Sad that the summary wouldn't also mention how the lawsuit was settled.

FTFA:
1. Prevent them from giving their talk
2. Judge threw out the gag order
3. Amicable???

The settlement ends the matter in an amicable way.

The article fails to really specify end results, but it sounds like some kind of job deal was worked out where the kids will help improve security.

Just to give everyone some perspective on how long 150 years actually is, the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. 232 years ago. Think about how people would have felt had the Declaration been under copyright, with no reproduction allowed until 1925, well after WW1. Does that not strike anyone else as pretty crazy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ww1

New "Endoscope On a Pill" 96

ScienceDaily is reporting that a new form of endoscope developed at the University of Washington is more like swallowing a pill than the typical "massive" cable. The pill, complete with a 1.4 mm wide tether, contains a single optical fiber for illumination and six fibers for collecting light. "Once swallowed, an electric current flowing through the UW endoscope causes the fiber to bounce back and forth so that its lone electronic eye sees the whole scene, one pixel at a time. At the same time the fiber spins and its tip projects red, green and blue laser light. The image processing then combines all this information to create a two-dimensional color picture."

Ultimate iPhone Review — Will It Blend? 347

I've been enjoying the Will it Blend videos forever. There's something about a labcoat clad crazy man putting things like marbles and soda cans into a blender and after reducing them to powder, warning you not to breathe in the particles. Well today they ask the ultimate question of the latest over-hyped internet sensation Will the iPhone Blend? Fans of these videos can probably guess the answer... and this story made my morning. I've been waiting for an excuse to link these forever. If you haven't seen these, you're in for a real treat.

Rootkit Could Hide In PCI Cards 134

Reverse Gear writes "SecurityFocus has an interesting article about a paper published on the possibility of hiding a rootkit in different PCI cards and having the rootkit survive a reboot or cleansing of the hard disk. It seems though that the author of the article doesn't think this would be abused frequently. From the article and paper: '(Because) enough people do not regularly apply security patches to Windows and do not run anti-virus software, there is little immediate need for malware authors to turn to these techniques as a means of deeper compromise.'"

Microsoft Will Allow Vista Reinstalls 349

Claus Valca writes "I just spotted over on the Windows Vista Team Blog the news that the Windows Vista retail licensing terms are being revised. Looks like PC home-brew system builders have been let back into the Vista party!" From the article: "Our intention behind the original terms was genuinely geared toward combating piracy; however, it's become clear to us that those original terms were perceived as adversely affecting an important group of customers: PC and hardware enthusiasts. You who comprise the enthusiast market are vital to us for several reasons, not least of all because of the support you've provided us throughout the development of Windows Vista. We respect the time and expense you go to in customizing, building and rebuilding your hardware and we heard you that the previous terms were seen as an impediment to that — it's for that reason we've made this change."
