Comment Cydia was powerful (Score 1) 69

When Ä started jailbreaking it was for the added functionality Apple/devs didn't or couldn't provide. Most of the time a dev had a patch for the vulnerability in ios so we could jealbreak. For most cydia was an alternative store and Apple made it very hard for Saurik and the JB devs to keep on giving us the possibilties Apple wouldn't. Apple prevented progress...

The war against PKK is not the war on Kurds, most of the PKK terrorist caught or killed have cross arpund their neck. Suggesting that the PKK is the same group created by the UK, that wanted to destabilize Iran after the the supporters of Ayatollah had overtrown their king. It was purely because Iran took back their natural resources from the UK that their had to deal with terrorism. The same is happening in the south east of Turkey. It's a big pie and everyone want the biggest piece. Ät has nothing to do with turks and kurs or whatsoever, 85 ethic groups live in Turkey. But only the kurds say "I am kurdish"... Read some very critical books my friend and stop repeating lies! I am from Qarabag, annexated territory by the Armenians. Stop this bullshit, please...

Japanese Game Developers Go West 84

donniebaseball23 writes "More and more Japanese game studios and publishers are looking toward the West. But as the industry becomes more global, is this really such a bad thing? From the article: 'Gameplay is an art that transcends borders, and it simply makes good business sense to keep your eyes open for opportunities no matter where they present themselves, as Zenimax, EA and THQ clearly have. Far from ruining the Japanese gaming industry, it may in fact save some of the best Japanese developers from considering retirement or a career change. They'll be able to make games on their own terms with their own original IP, and shouldn't it ultimately be about these creative types being able to realize their visions?""

FASTRA II Puts 13 GPUs In a Desktop Supercomputer 127

An anonymous reader writes "Last year tomography researchers of the ASTRA group at the University of Antwerp developed a desktop supercomputer with four NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics cards. The performance of the FASTRA GPGPU system was amazing; it was slightly faster than the university's 512-core supercomputer and cost less than 4000EUR. Today the researchers announce FASTRA II, a new 6000EUR GPGPU computing beast with six dual-GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 graphics cards and one GeForce GTX 275. The development of the new system was more complicated and there are still some stability issues, but tests reveal the 13 GPUs deliver 3.75x more performance than the old system. For the tomography reconstruction calculations these researchers need to do, the compact FASTRA II is four times faster than the university's supercomputer cluster, while being roughly 300 times more energy efficient."

The Inside Story on Norway's Yes to OOXML 254

Steve Pepper writes "The former Chairman of the Norwegian ISO committee, who resigned two weeks ago in protest against his country's vote of Yes to OOXML, tells the inside story of how the decision was reached: how a single bureaucrat from Standards Norway sidelined the overwhelming majority of Norwegian technical experts and changed Norway's vote from No to Yes. The story is so surreal it's hard to believe." It's as depressing as it is brief.

US Does Surprisingly Well in Internet Survey 123

Herman's hermit writes "A new report from the World Economic Forum ranks the US number four when it comes to 'network readiness,' despite the fact that the same report has the US 17th broadband subscribers and 19th in bandwidth. 'While good news overall for the US, which is poised to take full advantage of information technology gains, the report probably won't change many minds when it comes to talking specifically about US broadband deployment.'"

Microsoft Gets a New Open Source Chief 131

mjasay writes "Microsoft just promoted Sam Ramji to run its growing Linux and open source operations. The former head of Microsoft's Open Source Software Lab, Ramji has a long history with open source, having built out large-scale open-source based applications while at Ofoto, and continuing to run applications like World of Warcraft and Office 2003 on WINE. Microsoft has been putting increasingly open-source savvy people in this role, starting with Jason Matusow and most recently employing Bill Hilf in the role. Ramji has made friends with many in the open-source business and development communities, but will his promotion spell any sort of an about-face for Microsoft in its patent policies? It's unlikely, but at least it demonstrates a step in the right direction."
