Regardless of the agents (public or private) behind it, a better health care IT infrastructure is rather desperately needed - at least in Canada. If my partner's experience as an ER nurse is any indication, there is a fair amount of duplication and waste, and a not-insignificant contribution to the ER mortality rate, caused by the lack of a central electronic repository of patient data.
