Anti-Product Placement For Negative Branding 130

An anonymous reader writes "Product placement to promote your brand just isn't enough any more. These days, apparently, some companies are resorting to anti-product placement in order to get competitors' products in the hands of 'anti-stars.' The key example being Snooki from Jersey Shore, who supposedly is being sent handbags by companies... but the bags being sent are of competitors' handbags as a way to avoid Snooki carrying their own handbag, and thus potentially damaging their brand."

I was on the McAfee tech support line back then... It was SO nice when your users had half a clue...(getting a modem up an running, downloading a file, downloading PKzip, and then unzipping the app all took at least half a clue back then)

Then they started selling it in stores... I still have nightmares...

Celestix does a Websense "appliance", and M86 has an appliance.. both are probably close to that price range...
I've seen Symphonix in a bunch of small company installations too.

I'm not overly fond of the way the M86 product's method of group based surfing permissions work.. basically a user can only be in one group at a time. ex. Group A can see ebay, Group B can see craigslist. If you need somone to see both, you have to create Group C with permissions to see both.

New Medical Disorder Linked To Gaming 224

oldspewey writes "A new skin disorder caused by use of games consoles has been identified by skin specialists. The condition, dubbed "PlayStation palmar hidradenitis", is described in the British Journal of Dermatology. Researchers outline the case of a 12-year-old girl who attended a Swiss hospital with intensely painful sores on the palms of her hands. The girl, who had been using a games console regularly, recovered fully after 10 days of abstinence. The doctors suspect that the problem was caused by tight and continuous grasping of the console's hand-grips, and repeated pushing of the buttons, alongside sweating caused by the tension of the game. Nina Goad, of the British Association of Dermatologists said: 'This is an interesting discovery and one that the researchers are keen to share ... If you're worried about soreness on your hands when playing a games console, it might be sensible to give your hands a break from time to time, and don't play excessively if your hands are prone to sweating.'" A Real Bill Gates Rant 293

lou ibmix XI submitted an email written by Bill Gates a few years ago and turned over to the feds as part of the government's antitrust case. Great quotes like 'Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable?' and 'The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind.' We like to think of him as an abstract, but I think this is interesting stuff. Also, this might seem familiar. Oops.

Minnesota Public Radio's "The Story" show with Dick Gordon did a piece on Mohamed Fikry, an almost 5 million mile customer with American Airlines... and they pulled the SAME CRAP. Twice! Once because a customer heard him speaking "a foreign language on the phone" (it was Spanish) and once because a flight attendant thought she'd seen him "backstage". 5 Million Miles! with the same airline... And to top it off, they had the FBI pull him from the plane AFTER they flew to the destination! If he were such a threat, why let him fly at ALL... Gotta love airline customer service. Comment Yes, DFS (Score 1) 448

Not a replication DFS, but a namespace DFS.

Create a "stand alone root", NOT a domain root, on a server.
Then add links to it, where they point to shares on workstations.

This acts more like a bunch of symbolic links to the various boxes, with one entry point the the share. Not the same data everywhere, like a domain root would be.
