Of course they could just use cameras to do this much more effectively, but the researchers had to come up with some angle to justify their work.

Functional illiteracy is rampant in public high schools now as a direct result of GWB's "no child left behind" whereby there are no consequences for students who fall short of educational standards. They cannot be held back grades in elementary, middle, and junior high school so you have freshman classes with compounded disparities between the overachievers and underachievers which teachers can't hope to deal with, especially in the 30+ class sizes that are the norm.
