I have to agree, I work as a contract consultant and I'm very happy in my job. I get all the benefits of a senior role, picking the work I'd like to do, still able to get my hands dirty if I want to etc. Office politics and personal development plans fall into the rubbish category, which for the most part I can completely ignore.
My work involves me with people in permenant positions in management, for the most part they are overworked and miserable, whereas the other consultants all seem quite a bit happier.
The best part is you can finish up with a really good looking CV.
