My mom got her CS degree in '77 and went to work for IBM. She's been working on mainframes ever since and bristles at the mere mention of them going away. The vast volume of transactions they can handle means they are ideally suited to specific tasks and she's quick to remind anyone of that. I'm now in school for my CS degree and she keeps trying to convince me to join the ranks, as it were, because all of her compatriots are nearing retirement age and surprisingly, the younger generation just has no desire to work on mainframes.
